The Cincinnati Bengals announced Tuesday a series of quarterback roster moves including the placement of starter Joe Burrow on the Reserve/Injured List.

Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed Monday that Burrow has turf toe, an injury suffered during the second quarter Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jake Browning stepped in as backup and went 21-for-32 with 241 passing yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and the game-winning 1-yard rushing touchdown as 18 seconds remained. He led Cincinnati 92 yards on 15 plays during their final drive in the fourth quarter, and Trey Hendrickson sacked Trevor Lawrence and the Bengals defense cost the Jaguars 10 yards on the game’s last possession.

Quarterback Brett Rypien joins the active roster after the Bengals signed him off the practice squad. He’s in his sixth season in the NFL with 10 career games played.

Cincinnati signed two quarterbacks to its practice squad: Sean Clifford, who played at Penn State, and Mike White, who joins his fifth NFL team.

Clifford played high school football in Cincinati at St. Xavier High School.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Burrow “will need toe surgery that will sideline him a minimum of three months.”

The Bengals are 2-0 under Taylor for the first time. The momentum seemed to vanish upon Burrow’s injury, though, Browning and the Bengals wouldn’t want anyone to think they’re giving up.

Browning played in nine games in 2023 starting seven and throwing for 1,936 yards and 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions. Cincinnati went 9-8 for the first of back-to-back seasons missing the playoffs both years, including when all four teams in the AFC North finished above .500 in 2023.

Taylor and the Bengals will go with Browning again as starting quarterback in an AFC North this season with starting quarterbacks Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, Joe Flacco in Cleveland and Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati’s next five games will come against teams that made the playoffs a year ago. The Bengals hope Burrow can return in December during a run toward their first playoff spot in three seasons.
