Kyle Schwarber joined the Four Home Run Club becoming the 21st Major League Baseball player to hit four long balls in a game on Thursday against the Atlanta Braves.
Schwarber hit his fourth homer in the seventh inning off Braves right-hander Wander Suero. The Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter ricocheted the baseball off the ESPN BET Sportsbook sign in right field as his three-run blast put Philadelphia ahead 18-4 and gave him a franchise-record nine RBIs.
Schwarber is a native of Middletown, Ohio, and he attended Indiana Unviersity from 2012-14.
As a Hoosier, Schwarber played both catcher and outfield. He earned All-Big Ten honors each of his three seasons on his way to climbing to sixth in program history with 40 home runs and earning two First Team All-American honors. Schwarber was taken No. 4 overall in the 2014 MLB Draft, and he’s the highest draft pick in Indiana baseball history.
Schwarber led the Greater Miami Conference with eight home runs and a .474 batting average as a senior at Middletown. He was a four-time team MVP and also earned a second team All-Ohio selection as a linebacker on the football field.
Schwarber had a chance at five home runs in the eighth inning against the Braves. With Atlanta shortstop Vidal Brujan pitching, Schwarber popped up the second pitch of his at-bat and flew out to left fielder Eli White on the infield fly rule.
The Phillies beat the Braves 19-4.
Schwarber’s final line: 4-for-6, 16 TB, 9 RBI, 4 HR, 4 R.
