Major League Baseball will see the first woman to umpire in a regular-season game for the first time in history this weekend.

According to Brian Murphy of MLB.com, Jen Pawol will umpire in Atanta during the Miami Marlins–Braves series “including both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader and the series finale on Sunday, where she will be behind home plate.”

Pawol began her professional umpiring career at the then-Gulf Coast League in 2016 after doing so in the NCAA from 2010-16, according to Ben Walker and Ronald Blum of The Associated Press. She attended an MLB umpire tryout camp in 2015 and was invited to the Umpire Training Academy.

Pawol was a three-time all-state player in softball and soccer while in high school in New Jersey before going to Hofstra, where she also earned three all-conference honors, according to the AP. She played at the Amateur Softball Association Major Fast Pitch level for 10 years, according to MLB.

Pawol “is one of 17 current Triple-A umpires eligible to serve as a substitue in Major League games,” and “the doubleheader necessitated adding a fifth umpire to the crew” in Atlanta this weekend, according to MLB.
