The Cincinnati Reds announced Thursday they signed Wake Forest right-hander and 2024 No. 2 overall draft pick Chase Burns.
According to MLB Pipeline senior writer Jim Callis, Burns set an MLB Draft “record with a $9.25 million bonus.” It surpasses the $9.2 million figure that the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed with Paul Skenes after the 2023 draft.

The Reds went back to Wake Forest with their first choice in the First-Year Player Draft, selecting Burns one year after taking his teammate and fellow righty Rhett Lowder with the No. 7 overall pick.
Burns finished his third season with the Demon Deacons this spring, and he broke the program record posting a Division I-best 191 strikeouts on the way to collecting 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year honors.
