Hunter Greene is the Cincinnati Reds’ 2025 Opening Day starting pitcher

The Cincinnati Reds announced Friday that Hunter Greene will start on the mound March 27 on Opening Day against San Francisco.

Greene enters his fourth Major League season, and he earns his second Opening Day nod joining his 3 1/3 inning no-decision in 2023 versus Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati’s No. 2 overall draft pick in 2017, Greene emerged last season as an All-Star for the first time in his career. He finished eighth in the National League Cy Young voting after pitching 150 1/3 innings, striking out 169 and compiling a 2.75 ERA, all career bests.

According to the Reds, Greene joins Luis Castillo, Johnny Cueto and Aaron Harang as the fourth Cincinnati pitcher with multiple Opening Day starts at Great American Ballpark. Greene “will also become the sixth Reds hurler since 1900 to start in multiple season openers before turning 26.” He will join Pete Donohue, Don Gullett, Gary Nolan, Ewell Blackwell and Pete Schneider.

Greene is 0-1 in three starts during Spring Training. The Los Angeles native turned in his best start however on Wednesday as Greene went four scoreless innings punching out six while allowing two hits and one walk against Texas. The right-hander has 11 strikeouts in eight innings this spring, though he’s also allowed seven runs and given up two homers.

First pitch at GABP on Opening Day is 4:10 p.m. The 2025 Findlay Market Opening Day Parade begins at noon.
